ROPE is a project by visual artist Ief Spincemaille. On a huge self-made braiding installation, he developed a large-scale rope with a length of 60 meters and a diameter of 28 cm. Rope was made too large and has therefore lost its function as a rope. By creating various visual performances in public space, Rope acquires a new role and meaning.
In addition to the art project, Atelier Ief Spincemaille introduced Ropes of 6 and 12 meters in different colors and materials as open design objects; a modular seating, lounge, meeting or play object. They can be used in private and public spaces, both indoors and outdoors.
Atelier Ief Spincemaille teamed up with textile designer Esther Van Schuylenbergh for a new series of short Ropes, in which they explored the visual interplay between the large-scale hand braiding technique and the detailed structures of the webbing. Developed on an industrial jacquard tape loom with six alternating warp colors, the webbing consists of multilayered weave structures in which patterns appear by combining different warp colors in each layer. By adding subtle changes in the woven pattern along the entire length of each individual tape, once braided new intriguing patterns arise in the rope.
