INTERWOVEN is an ongoing series of three-dimensional woven textiles created on the industrial jacquard loom at the Textile Center in Haslach, Austria. Developed during a residency at the Center in 2021, the project explores the potential of the jacquard loom to produce layered, structural textiles that simulate upscaled traditional weaving and braiding patterns found in the museum’s archive.

Through inventive use of materials and bindings, a technique was developed to create a hollow, reversible structure in which any woven pattern can be applied. Composed of layers with distinct material properties, soft volumes emerge after a steaming treatment that causes the inner elastane layer to shrink, elevating the sturdy linen outer layers. This way tubular diagonals are running over and under each other like warp and weft, imitating large-scale braided and woven patterns.
